Federal update. The financial aid industry recently has undergone massive change. Many in the industry question: What do we need to do now? Engage with your colleagues as we review the latest guidance on industry changes including the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Cohort default rates. Changes made by the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 are likely to increase cohort default rates for most colleges and universities. Learn what you can do now to improve your school’s rates in the future. Understanding how cohort default rates are calculated and how they affect schools and borrowers will help you make sure you’re not caught off guard by these changes.

USA Funds update. USA Funds® offers extensive debt management resources to assist financial aid professionals with student loan management and default prevention efforts. Reauthorization changes in the calculation of future cohort default rates make these debt management resources even more valuable. Learn more about these resources, including how the USA Funds debt management team can provide free one-on-one consultations to help you fine-tune your default prevention efforts.

Conflicting information. A student submits a tax return to the financial aid office, but is not selected for verification. The Veterans Affairs official responsible for certification at the school is notified that a student’s benefit amount is changing. The public relations office receives a list of scholarship recipients. All of these scenarios could present conflicting information that must be resolved. Resolving conflicting information involves the institution as a whole, not just the financial aid office. Examples, case studies and discussion items will help you identify the sources of conflicting information and resolve conflicts in an appropriate timeframe.
